Silchar: In protest against the most ‘faulty’ NRC and the continuous harassment of people even after its publication and the spectre of ‘D’ voter, North East Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee (NELECC) has decided to hold massive public demonstration before the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on Tuesday. Santanu Naik, leading advocate and frontline leader of the organisation, pointed out no linguistic and ethnic group of people of Assam has anything positive to say about NRC. Besides being ‘faulty’ and a document to shield the aliens, Prateek Hajela’s monumental exercise has ended virtually in fiasco.
All that the years of process has left behind is a tale of endless physical, mental and fiscal torture on all sections of people, mostly poor and economically weak living in remote and isolated villages. The victims of partition have their own sad tale to narrate about the NRC. These persecuted people have also to go through the long and arduous trial to prove their bonafide as a citizen whereas the national leaders of the time gave assurances to protect them after migration. Nothing of the sort has happened, rued Santanu Naik.
The 19 lakh plus left outs also include sons of the soil and indigenous people who have declared they will not go through FT process. In fact, a crisis is looming large. In the meantime, APW has moved the Supreme Court, seeking 100% reverification. NELECC on its part is worried at the fate of the Hindu Bengali refugees and forcefully pleads for Implementation of the twin Notifications of September 7, 2015 of Union Home Ministry in Assam. If the twin Notifications can become effective in other states, why not in Assam, NELECC argues?
Santanu Naik at the same time reminds the Centre of its poll promise to do away with detention camp and the enactment of CAB. If the Centre is serious about the protection of Hindus, it can easily direct the state to implement the twin Notifications as well as promulgate ordinance on CAB. He is also critical of the role of people’s representatives who continue to indulge in lyrical oratory to assure the harassed people just to hoodwink them. If the documents produced by the left outs could not be enough to prove their citizenship, what more documents would now they produce before the FT and how the poor can meet the expenses. It means it will be another round of years of harassment and finally the detention camp. Besides holding demonstration, NELECC will send a memorandum signed by 20,000 people to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for implementation of the Notifications and CAB. Swapan Suklabaidya of VHP said all Hindu organisations are extending support to NELECC.
