Silchar: The district administration of Cachar has added a new dimension to herald the 73rd Independence Day celebration. People from all walks of life, students and youths as well as officials participated in the unity run this morning organized by the Cachar district administration in association with district sports association. The objective behind the run is to bring about the sense of unity. As DC Laya Madduri said such run on the eve of ID is to remind us of the great sacrifices of the freedom fighters and inspire us to emulate their ideals. Most importantly, it infuses in us the sense of patriotism.

A rally was also brought out after dusk from the office of the Deputy Commissioner to spread the message of peace. The peace march joined by citizens, youths and students after traversing through the main thoroughfares converged at Gandhi Bag. In all solemnity, candles were lit before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and tributes paid to the great leader. On the forefront was Laya Madduri, the deputy commissioner.

In between the message of peace and patriotism, yet another programme on ‘drug abuse awareness’ was held in the conference hall of Gurcharan College addressed by Dr Presenjit Ghosh, psychiatrist, who cautioned the youths in particular about the harmful effects of consuming drugs and advised them to keep themselves at safe distance from such vices. Concerned citizens however want stringent action against those who trade in contraband goods.

In the meantime, security across the district has been beefed up. All the exit and entry routes of the district and its border with Bangladesh have been brought under vigilance. 144 CrPc has been promulgated along the international border by the District Magistrate. All preparations have been made including the rehearsal of combined units of BSF, CRPF, Assam Police, women police Bn, NCC, Scout and Guide to make the Independence Day celebration a success which will be held at the DSA Ground here.
