PHED Hands Over Piped Rural Water Supply Schemes To PRIs

Hailakandi: In a bid to ensure uninterrupted piped drinking water supply in the rural areas, operation and maintenance activities of piped water supply schemes (PWSS) will be carried out through Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in Hailakandi district.

In a significant development, the Public Health Engineering department, Hailakandi Division handed over 125 of the total 321 PWSS to PRIs at a function held at Ravindra Bhawan auditorium on Wednesday in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, Zilla Parishad and PHED officials and PRI members.

DC, Jalli said the handing over of rural piped water supply schemes to PRIs will go a long way in ensuring drinking water to the rural populace of the district. The Deputy Commissioner asked the engineers of PHED to extend all possible help and support in smooth functioning of the PWSS under the respective jurisdiction of the PRIs. Jalli also underscored the need for strengthening the users’ committees with induction of more members.

Executive Engineer, PHED, Megha Das said his department will provide all sorts of help, including technical support for overall maintenance of the PWSS. Das said the department will hand over the rest 196 PWSS to PRIs in due course of time.

Handing over and taking over process of 125 rural piped water supply schemes by PHED to PRI representatives took place at the end of the function.
