SILCHAR: There is no dearth of star campaigners for Silchar Congress candidate Sushmita Dev who is also the sitting MP from here. Campaigning is going on in full swing and a number of star campaigners are visiting different constituencies for their respective party candidate.
The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former cricketer, commentator and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu among others have raised the bar. Most likely Priyanka Gandhi, Congress general secretary, is coming to take part at a road show in Silchar on April 14 to campaign for Sushmita Dev.
On Friday, Navjot Singh Sidhu campaigned for Sushmita Dev here. He said that the Prime Minister has looted the common masses and the country would be finished if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister of the country once again.
He addressed an election rally at Itkhola here on Friday. He also said that Narendra Modi has only helped rich industrialists like Ambani increasing their wealth. Around 1,000 people were there at the rally and they shouted various slogans. Addressing the issue of Cachar Paper Mill, Navjot Singh Sidhu said that Narendra Modi had promised that the mill would be revived and that detention camps would also be demolished. “All these were promises were forgotten after elections. In fact, the number of detention camps have increased after the BJP came to power,” pointed out Sidhu.
Sharimstha Mukherjee, Congress leader and daughter of Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, criticized the present government and said that demonetization was a complete failure. She too slammed the government for not fulfilling the promise related to the revival of the two paper mills. Among others present included former minister Ajit Singh, former MLAs Rumi Nath, Anamul Haque and Pradip Dey, president of the district Congress committee.
