Silchar, May 20: A massive protest rally protesting the serving of notice from the Foreigners’ Tribunal of Cachar district to Barkhola MLA Kishor Nath and his family members was taken out by the members of Barkhola and Salchappra Mandal committees of BJP, Mahila Morcha, Yuva Morcha, ST Morcha, Tea Morcha, Minority Morcha, Kisan Morcha and other branches and organizations of BJP on Saturday. The protest rally which began from the BJP office, Itkhola, Silchar, converged before the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. Slogans ranted the air. Biswajit Das and Hemanga Shekhar Das of the saffron party met with the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Dr S Lakshmanan, IAS and expressed their shock and disgust.

A memorandum was also submitted to the Cachar DC. It was been stated in the memorandum that the inclusion of name of the MLA along with his family members in suspected voters’ list are executed with mala fide intention to harass the public representative. They have urged upon the DC, if possible, to instruct the DSP (Border) to investigate the report. The 53 year old MLA has said that the serving of notice from the Foreigners’ Tribunal genuine citizens of India has been a tradition flourishing from the Congress regime. Kishor Nath and his family members have been asked to prove their citizenship.

“It started during the Congress regime and is still continuing. We have been staying in Barak Valley since ages. We have documents dated well before 1950. My name along with the names of my family members is there in the 1st draft list of NRC. Our ancestors have been living here since time immemorial,” said Kishor Nath. He further said, “If an MLA, an elected representative, and his family can be served such notices, I wonder what is happening to the common people. We are shell shocked and are unable to grasp it.” His advocate Santanu Naik, co president of BJP Cachar district committee said, “This in unbelievable. Border branch of Cachar Police should have been more vigilant and observant before initiating such notices. An MLA cannot be a foreigner. It reflects that the personnel of border branch are not doing their duties,” said Naik.

MLA Dilip Kumar Paul too expressed his resentment over the issue. Congress leader Dr Rumi Nath and former Barkhola MLA said, “The serving of notice to an elected representative of the ruling party is a shameful act. We know him and his family since ages. If he is foreigner, how on earth he became an MLA? Is this how the Chief Minister and his party are working for or serving the people?”
