‘Readers are lifelines of a newspaper’

Silchar, May 17: Readers are lifelines of a newspaper. This important observation was made by Atin Das, poet, columnist and former editor of Dainik Jugashankha at the commemoration ceremony of the 48th death anniversary of the founder of Dainik Jugashankha, Barta Bhagirath Baidyanath Nath or Baidyanath Nath, which was observed by the Sankha Group of Publications at the meeting hall of Madhyashohor Sanskritik Samiti on Tuesday. A day long programme was observed which formed a part of readers’ day (Pathak Divas) also. Dainik Jugashankha is the most circulated Bengali daily of Silchar which is published simultaneously from Kolkata, Siliguri, Dibrugarh and Guwahati.

Atin Das said that circulating a daily from Silchar, which is one among the 307 remotest places of India, is a Herculean task. Atin Das credited the ascension of this newspaper to its readers. This year, 3 readers, Debolina Roy of Silchar, Sajal Bhattacharjee of Hailakandi and Abdul Hannan of Badarpur, were bestowed with awards for excelling in writing letters to editor. Cash prize and appreciation certificate were handed over by Arijit Aditya, editor, Tamojit Bhattacharjee, senior journalist, and Manmohan Mishra, of Dainik Jugasankha.

It was followed by an enlightening interactive session hosted by the distinguished academician Joydeep Biswas. The editorial team of the newspaper took up the various suggestions put up by the readers who were present at the event. In his welcome address, Nilotpal Choudhury, executive director of Sankha Group of Publications chronicled the history of Dainik Jugasankha. He said that the newspaper has sailed on the roughest of seas also. It has seen the best of times and the worst of times. Arijit Aditya and Nilotpal Choudhury answered the various queries made by the audience.

Later, a book titled ‘Bhasha Andolaner Prekkhapot O Ekasdosh Shaheed Smarone’ written by Nabendu Shekhar Nath, was released by senior journalist Mahua Choudhury, editor of Eastern Chronicle Samar Kanti Roy Choudhury and others. Nilotpal Choudhury hailed the work as an important work. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Taimur Raja Choudhury, editor of Samayik Prasanga, former MP Kamalendu Bhattacharjee and others. The day long programme ended on a vote of thanks by Debashish Purkayastha of Dainik Jugasankha.
