Silchar runs marathon for Swachh Survekshan

Silchar, Jan 8: A large number of people participated in the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ awareness marathon, which was jointly organized by the district administration and the Silchar Municipal Board here today. S Viswathan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, flagged off the marathon, which commenced from Capital Point at early hours of the morning and ended at Rangirkhari Point. S Viswathan said, “I am delighted to see the number of people who have gathered here in the early morning for supporting the cause. The marathon will spread the message of cleanliness among the residents of this town.”

The DC is hopeful that Silchar can give tough competition to other cities if the residents of the town keep their city clean. “I am confident that the town would soon turn into a clean and beautiful one,” he added to say. Kabindra Purkayastha, former Union Minister, said, “This initiative has been adopted to take India at the world stage. I can foresee that Prime Minister Modi’s dream of a clean India is going to be a reality.” Niharendra rayan Thakur, chairman of Silchar Municipal Board, said the huge turnout has proved that the residents of this town want Silchar to get listed among the top 500 cleanest cities to be selected under Swachh Survekshan 2017.

Members of various NGOs, SHGs along with educatiol and health institutions came out on the streets to participate in the marathon. They were seen running across the streets with their respective banners. Drinking water was provided to the participants by different NGOs. Participants were also given light refreshments.
