SILCHAR : The detention of the 8 member Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation at Silchar airport by the district and police administration of Cachar on Thursday has been deemed ‘undemocratic’ and ‘unconstitutional’ by MP Sushmita Dev, MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.

“The team which comprises MP, MLA and minister was detained undemocratically at the airport. The government is trying to mislead the people. Government does not want the Parliament and the people know about this fallacious and erroneous NRC draft list,” said MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.

“BJP itself is not clear about its stand on the issue. All India BJP president Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh have passed contradictory statements. Same is the case in Barak Valley. What was the use of clamping Section 144 of CrPC? It is an island of peace and there was no need to intensify the situation. It was a shameful act on the part of the administration to detain a delegation like this,” the MLA added to say. MP Sushmita Dev said that it is an unconstitutional act. “If such things keep on happening, it will be difficult to main peace and harmony in the entire northeast region,” said the MP.

However, State BJP spokesperson Dr Rajdeep Roy begged to differ here. He has supported the bold step taken by the administration. Talking to The Sentinel over telephone, he said, “There are lots of issues and problems in the state of Assam which needs to be solved at the earliest. Mamata Banerjee has never bothered about Assam. All of a sudden she sends a delegation to Barak Valley for assessing the situation post publication of final draft NRC list. One should remember that BJP’s Lal Krishna Advani had also undergone the same trial in 1992 in Bihar.

Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC supremo has termed it as ‘super emergency’. The team comprising MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Ratna De Nag, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Nadimul Haque and Arpita Ghosh, minister Firhad Hakim and MLA Mohua Moitra arrived at Silchar at around 1 pm. The delegation had to spend a night at Silchar airport. They were allotted three dormitories, air-conditioned rooms.
