Silchar: While the whole country was busy in observing the 72nd Independence Day of India, members of Unconditional Citizenship Demand Forum (UCDF) hit the streets of Silchar and thronged Goldighi Mall on Wednesday demanding to dissolve detention camps in Assam. The members demanded that the government and authorities concerned should not harass people. Chandradhar Das, a 102-year-old man has been appearing again and again in the FT to prove his citizenship. The centurion is a resident of Amraghat which is more than 40 kms away from Silchar.
The absence of Assistant Government Pleader (AGP) at FT – 6 has made things worse for him. It is pertinent to mention here that the family members of Chandradhar Das have been trying hard for the last 6 months to relieve him. It is indeed unfortunate and inopportune that a 102 year old man, in the 72nd Independence of the country, has to survive as a ‘foreigner’.
Chandradhar Das had to stay in Silchar Central Jail, termed ‘detention camp’ by the authorities, from March 31, 2018 to June 27, 2018. This was hell of an experience for him as well as for his family members. UCDF has also been supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 for the very beginning.
