Veteran CPM leader Deepak Bhattacharjee passes away

Silchar: Former MLA, leader of peasantry and working class people as well as a frontline figure during language movement, Deepak Bhattacharjee passed away this morning at 6.15 am at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. He was ailing for sometime due to cardiac problem which led to complications in the functioning of kidney. His death has been mourned deeply by cross sections of people irrespective of caste, creed and political differences. At the time of death, he was 79.

Deepak Bhattacharjee had been associated with several social and cultural organizations and played vital role in creative and constructive activities that endeared him to all. He was quite polite and gentle. He was elected MLA in 1978 from Hailakandi constituency and became popular for his dynamism and integrity. Unassuming and unpretending, he always led a simple life. He is survived by his wife Anima Bhattacharjee. His body was kept at Saheed Bhawan, the party office at Malugram, for people to pay their respect to him. After that the body was taken to Hailakandi for cremation and last rites.

Hailakandi: The mortal remains was brought to Hailakandi town and kept at the CPI(M) office where people from all walks of life paid their last respects to the departed leader. Later the mortal remains mounted on a vehicle was taken around the main thoroughfares of Hailakandi town before it was taken to Silchar for his last rites. Following the news of his demise, Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi, Keerthi Jalli extended her heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family on behalf of the district administration and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul. Different organizations, including Public Forum condoled his death and offered condolences to the bereaved family.
