Women take up cudgels against rowdy elements in Cachar areas

Special Correspondent

Silchar: Greatly upset and disturbed by the rowdy elements of Hillara area under Katigorah police station of Cachar, women under the banner of All India Democratic Women’s Association have taken up cudgels against selling and consumption of alcohol and drug under the very nose of the civil and police administration. The trend is increasing among the younger people, creating a vicious atmosphere. If it remains unchecked, it will continue to take in its grip the entire locality, warns Lakhi Das, frontline member of the Democratic Women’s Association.

The women in general have pledged to take upon themselves to browbeat the rowdy elements dealing in drugs and other contraband goods. The consumption of alcohol and country made liquor as well as drugs is assuming alarming proportion. It is leading to social unrest and many families are seriously concerned at the future of their youths. As Lakhi Das in their memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar pointed out the growing unhealthy addiction to all sorts of intoxicating substances has wider social implications.

The Association has been observing that family peace is disturbed and there have been instances when the helpless parents have to fight it out with their young sons to desist from the evil path. Women are now scared to move out as the drunkards often take to obscene gestured and slang words. Family feuds have become a common affair. It arises from the bad habits of male members who have to consume the intoxicating substances and liquids without caring for family status and income. They do not hesitate to misbehave with their spouses and children, said Lakhi Das. The children are growing up in an unhealthy atmosphere.

In view of the ever expanding social menace created by the druggists and drunkards, the sellers and other elements, Deputy Commissioner has been urged upon to take strict measures against them in order to put an end to all the vices to save the younger generation.

The police administration of the locality has to be directed to be vigilant and patrol the areas to demolish the structures or selling points of the contraband goods. The saner sections of people have to be engaged to eliminate the evil from the root. Punitive steps have to be taken against those who break the rules of law and help create healthy atmosphere for living a quality of life. Otherwise, All India Democratic Women’s Association will take to street and fight, cautions Bina Pani Roy, a member.
