GUWAHATI: According to a source, the DoNER Ministry's North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) has authorized 800 farmers and entrepreneurs to use the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for 13 agricultural goods from the northeastern region.

The 13 produces are Arunachal Orange, Tezpur Litchi and Karbi Anglong Ginger of Assam, Kachai Lemon and Chak-Hao’ Black Rice of Manipur, Khasi Mandarin orange and Memang Narang orange of Meghalaya, Mizo Chilli of Mizoram, Naga Tree Tomato and Naga Sweet Cucumber of Nagaland, Queen Pineapple of Tripura and Sikkim Large Cardamom and Dalle Khursani chilli of Sikkim.

The DoNER Ministry's North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) would transmit the 800 user authorization applications from the eight NE states to the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai.

NERAMAC Managing Director Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Retd) said that, “The initiative will provide recognition to the unique qualities and reputation of NER agricultural products and protect them from misuse and imitation.”

On the other hand , around 11 Assam product have the GI tag, which are muga silk (2007-08), Assam Orthodox Tea (2008-09), Assam muga silk logo (2013-14), Karbi Anglong ginger (2014-15), Tezpur litchi (2014-15), joha rice (2016-17), boka choul (2018-19), kaji nimu (2019-20), chokuwa rice (2019-20), Judima (a drink of the Dimasas) (2021-22), and Assamese gamosa.

A geographical indicator (GI) is a label applied to items that have distinct geographical origins and traits or reputations as a result of those origins. This tag is issued by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade in accordance with the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

In 2022, Assamese Gamosa received a geographical indication (GI) tag from the central government.
