NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress released the first list of 55 candidates for the Meghalaya Assembly elections arranged on February 27. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in-charge Mukul Wasnik declared the names of the 55 candidates in New Delhi.

As per the list, state Congress President and Lok Sabha MP from the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Vincent H. Pala, will be contesting from the Sutnga Saipung Assembly constituency. Saleng A. Sangma, who had earlier resigned as Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA and joined hands with Congress on January 23, has been registered from the Gambegre (ST) Assembly constituency where he was elected in the 2018 election.

Ex-police officer who turned politician Champion R. Sangma would also take part from the Songsak constituency. Numerous former MLAs and ministers also received party tickets for the upcoming Assembly polls. Eight women candidates were included in the first list of candidates, which was released after a meeting of the CEC meeting chaired by party President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday. As per reports, most out of those 55 candidates are fresh faces.

Presenting the number of voters in the poll-bound states, Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) chief Rajiv Kumar said that there are more than 62.8 lakh electors incorporated in Nagaland, Meghalaya & Tripura inclusive of 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80 voters, and 31,700 PwD voters. About 1.76 lakh first-time voters to participate in the elections in these three states. The chief also announced that there will be a few polling stations administered entirely by PwDs and women staff where women will be in command in 376 polling stations across Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura.
