Mukul Sangma, former Meghalaya Chief Minister and other 11 MLAs among the 17 Congress MLAs of the state Meghalaya has now joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party led by party chief Mamata Banerjee.

On Wednesday 24 November at around 10 PM, former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma along with the other eleven MLAs of the state submitted their application to the Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly informing the speaker about their decision of changing the party.

This massive jolt of parties by political leaders in Meghalaya came forward after some of the congress leaders such as Ashok Tanwar and Kriti Azad joined the Trinamool Congress party in the presence of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. Congress leader Pawan Varma who is a former member of the Janata Dal (United) also joined TMC on the same day.

On Thursday afternoon in the state capital Meghalaya, a press meeting will be addressed by the new member of TMC who joined the party overnight. They will be making the formal announcement regarding the changes in the press meet.

Mamata Banerjee said that her party Trinamool Congress is always ready to welcome new political leaders from different political background or from other parties who wishes to join TMC in the fight against the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Trinamool Congress over the last few months has been successfully making inroads in the state of Meghalaya through its expansion process. Meghalaya is the latest state where Trinamool Congress has made in strong connections by spreading its awareness.

The inroad of TMC has been at the cost of the Congress in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Assam. TMC chief Ms Banerjee is always known to maintain a friendly and good relationship with the Chief of Congress, Sonia Gandhi though Banerjee has not scheduled any meeting with her this time. But there was news of a meeting to be held between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming days.

While being questioned on the matter of their meet Ms Banerjee said that she had not thought of any appointment with Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi since now as she has been busy with Punjab Polls. She further added that 'Why do they need to meet Sonia Gandhi all the time as this is not mandated constitutionally'.

The Trinamool Congress has been trying to make ways in Goa and Tripura for the expansion of its footprint aiming to the upcoming round of Assembly Elections in Goa and Tripura.
