GUWAHATI: Houses were demolished under eviction drive carried out at Imphal's reserved forest land. A deadline notice was issued to them on April 21 and then on April 24 the eviction was carried out where the structures were demolished. Locals who opposed the move when the houses were being demolished were dispersed using tear gas. It was a patrolling team under Central Forest Division which noticed the illegal housing. There have been requests from some leaders to arrange for separate housing for the ones evicted as the notice served did not give the locals enough time to look for options.

Meanwhile, in a positive development, Imphal West in Manipur and Aizawl West in Mizoram have entered into the orange zone from the red zone category of the COVID-19 pandemic. These are the two districts from the Northeast which have not reported even a single COVID-19 positive case after registering the first case.

Orange zone means in the last 14 days neither of the districts have reported any COVID positive cases. With no COVID cases in the next 14 days, both the districts will enter in to the green zone when they will be announced as COVID infection free area. Imphal West and Aizawl West, however, have been included amongst 27 districts from 17 States across India entering into the orange zone. “No COVID positive cases have been reported from 17 districts across India and Imphal West in Manipur and Aizawl West in Mizoram are also included,” said Lav Aggrawal, Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
