IMD Predicts Rain And Thunderstorms In Northeast Over Next Five Days

The IMD has forecasted rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Northeast India from March 11-15, issuing a yellow alert for affected states.

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that Northeast India is likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next five days, starting March 11.

The IMD has identified two troughs influencing the weather in the region. One trough extends along longitude 93°E to the north of latitude 23°N in the lower tropospheric levels, while another runs along longitude 82°E to the north of latitude 23°N in the middle tropospheric levels. As a result, the following weather conditions are expected:

Arunachal Pradesh: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is anticipated from March 11 to March 15. Isolated heavy rain is also anticipated from March 11 to March 17, with very heavy rain on March 13.

Assam and Meghalaya: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-50 km/h) are likely from March 11 to March 15.

Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura: The same conditions of scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and windy conditions (30-40 km/h) are anticipated from March 11 through March 16.

In light of these forecasts, a yellow alert has been issued for Assam and other Northeast states, urging residents to stay informed about potential weather changes. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has also provided a five-day weather forecast for the city, indicating generally cloudy skies with varying temperatures and chances of rain.
