GUWAHATI: Assam Olympic Association (AOA) constituted an organizing committee with Secretary General of Boxing Federation of India Hemanta Kalita as its president to smoothly organize the forthcoming Annual General Meeting of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The meeting is scheduled to be held in the city on December 19.

It will be the second time that Guwahati will host the Annual General Meeting of the IOA. Earlier the meeting was held in the city during the 2007 National Games. However this time the meeting is special as the new office bearers of the association will be elected in it.

Talking to the media person today the secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar said, "It is a very big occasion for us. All the top sports officials of the country including Nita Ambani, the representatives of IOC and former International athlete Anju Bobby George, will visit the city to attend the meeting and Assam Olympic Association will try its best to provide all kinds of support to make it a grand success."

He added: "Already we have constituted an organizing committee to look after various matters. An office will also be set up at Assam Olympic Association office premises from December 1 to monitor different things related to this meeting."

Meanwhile Konwar along with the treasurer Tapan Das will represent Assam Olympic Association in the meeting. A few more sports organizers from the state will also be seen in the meeting and they will represent their respective National Body's.

However Assam Olympic Association today didn't make it clear whether any one from the Association will contest for any post in the meeting. "Let's see. There is plenty of time," said Konwar.

It may be mentioned here that the poll process will elect a president, two senior vice-presidents, nine vice-presidents, secretary general, treasurer, six joint secretaries and 10 executive council members. Incumbent Narinder Batra is expected to seek re-election for the post of IOA president for another four-year term and it is learnt that he may retain the post without contest.
