Guwahati: Guwahati lad Debajit Sarma, a professional arm-wrestling player, has clinched the gold medal in the 95 kg category of the open national Arm-wrestling Championship held in Delhi on March 27.

A sports club going by the name of Lions Empire Group organized the arm-wrestling championship with the Thyagaraj Stadium in the national capital hosting the event. Earlier, various world arm-wrestling champions were invited by the club as guest honours.

It is to be noted that Debajit has been picked as the team captain of the Assam arm-wrestling team.

The arm-wrestler, while speaking to G Plus, shared his experience of the event.

"It was a wonderful feeling to be a part of the championship and more so in winning the gold. Meeting arm wrestlers from across the world was a special experience and I got to learn from everyone," he told G Plus.

He was also asked about the scope of arm-wrestling as a sport in Assam to which he replied by saying that earlier there was no glamour or proper coverage of the game, but with proper coverage of the game by the media, the scope has widened in today's times.

He also added that the expenses of travelling, accommodation, etc are covered by the organizers and it is mainly due to the fact that arm-wrestling is being taken up as a professional sport now.

He further went on to say that youths have now started taking interest in the game and are realizing the rising scope of it. Debajit is hoping that more people get influenced by the success of the sport and get motivated to take it up if interested.

Earlier, Debajit emerged as champion in the recently concluded All North East Armwrestling Competition held at Laban Sports Club in Shillong. He clinched a gold medal in the 75 kgs and above category and also won the Champion of the Champions title in the competition.
