Assam add 2 more medals to take the tally to 25 medals, Khelo India Games

GUWAHATI: Assam placed at 13th position in the medal tally with 25 medals on day VII of the Khelo India Games here today.

Host added two medals today which came in the weightlifting and cycling events. Weightlifter Chitra Prova Chetia gave a bronze medal in the U-17 girl's category. It was the 11th overall bronze medals for Assam in the Games. The side also won six gold and 11 silvers in this edition of the meet.

Assam’s cyclists won the other medal of the day, which was silver, in the Team pursuit (4000m) girls U-21 category. The team, comprised of Joyshree Gogoi, Chayanika Gogoi, Gongutri Bodoloi and Bristi Kongkon Gogoi, finished the race staying in second place with 5m: 38.543 sec.

The cyclists of the state displayed good show in the competition and bagged 8 medals in the Games. Among the 8 medals, one is gold which was collected by Gongutri Bordoloi. She also won one silver and one bronze medal. On the other hand, Chayanika Gogoi picked up four medals which included one silver and three bronze.

Apart from cycling, the Lawn Bowl team of Assam too came out with spectacular performance in the Games. They won four medals and three of them are gold and one is silver. Surajit Burhagohain gave gold in the Under-21 boys’ singles event while Suman Pandey, Suranjana Baruah, and Adinita Kakati clinched gold in the U-21 Girls’ triple event. The third gold came in the Boys’ fours event. Scion Shiv Mahanta, Sanzio Pandey, Roktim Kashyap Kalita, and Abhilekh Handique represented Assam in this event. Jinu Gogoi and Karina Patowary bagged lone bronze for the host in the U-21 Girls’ doubles event.

Earlier in athletics Akshay Boro (22.39 sec) won a silver medal in the 200mts of boys U-17 category. The last medal in the athletics, which concluded yesterday, came in the U-17 boy's triple jump event which was won by Jwngsar Basumatary (14.60m).
