GUWAHATI: Assam Athletics Association (AAA) will organize a couple of zonal and national level athletics meets in the coming months and also observe the entire December as the month of Athletics competition. They also decided to produce more coaches and technical staffs from the State

The announcement came in the Annual General Meeting of the AAA which was held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today. Representatives from 34 districts, 13 sub division units along with the current office bearers of the associations attended the meeting which was presided over by its president Lakhya Konwar.

Keeping in mind the promotion of Athletics in the State, a series of issues were discussed in the meeting and also took several crucial decisions. The meeting decided to observe the entire December as the month of athletics and a series of athletics competitions would be held across the state during the last month of the year.

It was also made mandatory for the participation of each affiliated district of the AAA in the National Inter District Junior Athletics Meet which is a talent hunt programme. Earlier several districts had skipped the meet citing different reasons. The meeting also gave importance to increase the number of coaches and technical staff in each district and AAA agreed to provide help in this regard to its member units. On the other hand from now onwards only administrative district will get affiliation of the AAA.

Meanwhile Guwahati will host the East Zone Junior Athletics championship next month. It would be followed by the National Junior Athletics meet in the city in February. Guwahati will also host the Senior Inter District Athletics meet while Junior Inter District tournament is allotted to Nalbari. All the districts were also instructed to complete the Inter Club Athletics Championship by December 6.

On the other hand the vacant post of Senior Vice President was filled with sports organizer Ritu Baran Sarmah from Tezpur. The post had been lying vacant after the death of Rajen Borthakur.

Earlier Lakhya Konwar was felicitated by the officials of the AAA and other affiliated units for his appointment as the Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India. Apart from Konwar the meeting was also attended by secretary and the treasurer of the association Ashok Bharali and Babul Khan respectively along with former international athlete Tayabun Nessa and others.
