Assam move to seventh place in 3rd Khelo India Games

GUWAHATI: Assam maintained the good show in the 3rd Khelo India Games as they collected seven more medals on Day IX today. Among the medals three are gold, three silver and one bronze.

With these medals host took their tally to 39 and are now placed at the seventh spot, best among the North East States, in the medals tally. Among the 39 medals 12 are gold, 13 silver and other 14 are bronze.

As expected Shivangi Sarma today picked up her third gold medal from the pool and this time in 400mts free style with 4:34. 55 timing. The swimmer, participated in the U-21 girls category, defeated Tamil Nadu’s Bhavika Dugar (4:55.64) and Haryana’s Jasmine Gurung (5:06.31), who bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively. U-21 girls swimming team of Assam also won a silver medal in the 4X100mts free style event with 4: 23.11 timing. The four members of the team were Shivangi Sarma, Syeda Zaima, Anubhuti Barua and Rinita Gogoi.

Host showed good show in the lawn bowl event on Saturday. They picked up two gold medals, one silver and also a bronze in this discipline. Sanzio Pandey and Abhilakh Handique won gold in Boys pairs. Suranjana Baruah, Suman Kumari Pandey, Jinu Gogoi and Karina Patowary also won gold medal in the Girls fours. Adinita Kakati gave a silver to her state in Girls singles. On the other hand Surajit Burhagohain, Scion Shiv Mahanta and Roktim Kashyap Kalita won the bronze medal in Boys triples. Lawn bowl event altogether gave eight medals to Assam in this edition of khelo India.

In the weightlifting discipline Ditimoni Sonowal picked up a silver medal in the 59 kg of U-21 girls category. It may be mentioned here that Ditimoni won a gold medal in the last edition of Khelo India also where she participated in the girls U-17 category.

In the football event Assam beat Karnataka 5-1 in the boys U-21 category and entered into the semi finals. Dipu Mirdha and Ruhit Hemrum scored two goals each while Ruhit Mech was the other scorer for the host. Surya reduced one for Karnataka.
