GUWAHATI: Assam failed to take advantage of good start against Haryana in the Ranji trophy as the side finished the first day 215-6 at the ACA stadium Barsapara here today.

Gokul Sharma bating on 51 and Arup Das (23) is giving him accompany.

Invited to bat, all the top order batsmen made good start in the innings but failed to take advantage of it. Opener Parvez Aziz and Rishav Das added 45 runs on the first wicket and at lunch home team were 81-1. Thereafter they lost wicket on regular interval.

It was Rishav who got out first today on his individual score 25. Parvez Aziz contributed 41 before he was bowled by Jayanta. Sibsankar Roy too made good start but missed another half century in the season by a single run. Three other wickets that Assam lost today were Kunal Saikia (2), Amit Sinha (12) and Rajjak Uddin Ahmed (5), Rajjakin included in the team at the very last minute as Swarupam Purkayastha, who was first choice in the first XI in place of injured Riyan Parag, had not necessary BCCI’s registration to play the game.

However although he witnessed fall of wickets on regular interval at the other end Gokul, who came into the team after recovering injury, played a well composed knock. The batsman was on the wicket for 192 minutes and faced 153 balls to score 51 runs with the help of 6 boundaries. Arup, who remained not out on 23, hit two boundaries during his 43rd minutes stay on the wicket. Among the bowlers of Haryana Jayanta Yadav, the most successful, bagged 2-37.

Meanwhile drama was witnessd throughout the day on the issue of Swarupam who had to sit out from the first XI for not having proper registration at BCCI. The selectors included him in the 15-member squad for this game and he was sure to be in the first Xi. But that was not possible. The ACA officials blamed the selectors for this fiasco as according to them it was selectors responsibility to know which players were registered to BCCI for the season. On the other hand Selectors said, they had submitted 28 players list to ACA for the registration and the name of Swarupam was included in it. If registration had not made then they should be informed which unfortunately didn’t happen.
