Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal interacts with sportspersons & organizers

GUWAHATI: The president of the Assam Olympic Association and the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today interacted with the sportspersons and sports organizers of the state via tele conference amid a nationwide lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. During the interaction Chief Minister appealed to the athletes to spread awareness in such times of crisis.

COVID-19 has brought the country to a standstill and all sporting activities were halted. Even FIFA U-17 Women World Cup soccer, which was supposed to be held in November, was postponed for indefinite period.

Sonowal, during the interaction, advised the athlete to follow the advisory and maintain social distancing.

A few of the athletes like Bhogeswar Baruah, Hima Das, Lovlina Borgohain, Shivangi Sharma also shared their thoughts with Chief Minister.

First Arjuna award winner of the state Bhogeswar Baruah said: “The situation in India is better than Western countries and it’s possible because of some well organized steps taken by the government.”

Hima Das, another Arjuna awardee of the state, said that everyone should strictly follow the lockdown programme as it is the best way to combat COVID-19. She also lambasted to those people who are harassing health workers and security personnel. Asian Games gold medalist today appealed to the Chief Minister to take action against those people.

The other participated in today’s interaction were the secretaries and president of the different District Sports Associations like Saibal Sengupta (Hailakandi), Pankaj Teron (Karbi Anglong),Sahendra Basumatari (Kokrajhar), Achyut Borthakur (President/Tinsukia) and Shiladitya Dev (President/Hojai).

Former Ranji cricketer Sajjad Zaheer Husain, who is now a businessman, today donated Rs 5 lakh to Assam Arogya Nidhi. Assam Olympic Association today distributed hand sanitizers in different localities.
