CM Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurates 36th National Junior Athletics

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 36th National Junior Athletics Championships 2021 at Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium here today. Altogether 1627 athletes representing 32 States have participated in the meet which is organized by Assam Athletics Association.

Addressing the gathering in the inaugural function Sonowal welcomed the participating athletes to Assam and wished them all the best for their performance. He also hoped that the best performing athletes of the championship would make the country proud in international sporting events in the future.

President of Athletics Federation of India Adille J Sumariwalla, also presents the function, in his speech said that while sports events remained confined to indoors due to coronavirus pandemic, Assam set an example by holding such a big championship outdoors for the first time in the country after the COVID-19 outbreak. He assured the Assam Athletics Association to award at least one junior national championship every year and also offers supporting its endeavors to get the opportunity to host the World Junior Championships in 2022.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal felicitated Hemanta Kumar Kalita who has been elected as the Secretary-General of the Boxing Federation of India.

The other present at the opening function was president of Assam Athletics Association Lakhya Konwar, Chief General Manager of SBI (NE Circle) RS Ramesh, Industry and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister of State for Revenue and Disaster Management Jogen Mohan, IOA associate vice president Paddi Richo, boxer Angkushita Boro, and former footballer Durga Boro.
