Puja gives Assam first gold

GUWAHATI: Assam won three more medals including one gold in the 3rd Khelo India Games here today but failed to elevate them in the medal tally. On Day III host are in the 18th position with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Maharashtra lead the tally with 38 medals and Delhi (23) are in the second spot.

The first medal of the day for Assam came in the Judo event and it was a gold which was won by Puja Basumatary in the below 57kg of U-17 girls. The event was held at the SAI sports complex. Puja defeated Sneha Chauhan of Uttarakhand in the final to give the state first gold medal of the competition. Her teammate Dharitri Sonowal gave second medal of the day to Assam and it was silver in girls above 63 kg. Dharitri, who performed well throughout the day, failed to keep same momentum in the final and had to satisfy with a silver. She lost the final to Nandini Vats of Delhi.

The third success came in the athletics event where Pingkhi Brahma (44.24m) bagged a bronze in javelin throw in the U-21 girls category. Hemamalini (46.54m) from Tamil Nadu and Anjani Kumari (44.32) from Bihar bagged gold and silver respectively.

Meanwhile in football Assam made winning start in the U-17 boys category defeating Chandigarh by 1-0 at LNIPE complex, Sonapur today. The solitary goal of the match was scored by Adarsh Rai Das.

Host made good start in the lawn bowl event also as the U-21 boys team defeated Bihar 14-3 in B four category. Host defeated same opponent in the U-17 category by 14-3.

In volleyball, held at the Karmavir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor stadium, Assam lost their all four matches. In the first game of the day Gujarat defeated Assam by 3-0 in the boys U-17 category. In the U-21 girl’s category Assam lost to Kerala by identical margin while U-21 boys also suffered defeat against Punjab by 0-3. U-17 girl’s team too failed to win their tie against West Bengal (0-3).
