GUWAHATI: The State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare today jointly felicitated Elvis Ali Hazarika. Hazarika recently scripted history by successfully swimming the English Channel both ways. In the same function, shooter Shhaurya Sharrma and body-builder Pobitra Nath were also felicitated.

Elvis, who became the first swimmer from Assam to swim the English Channel in both directions recently, re-turned to Guwahati today. Sharing his experience with the media in the function, the former international swimmer said, “I have faced a lot of difficulties while swimming in the English Channel. The weather during the return trip from France was so bad that the guide even suggested I abandon the swim. But I was adamant about continuing and finally being able to reach England again. It was my long dream to cross the English Channel, and I feel great to have achieved my goal.”

The felicitation function was attended by the secretary of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, K. J. Hila-li; its director, Prodip Timung; the Member Secretary of the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare, Gitartha Goswami; senior journalist Pranoy Bordoloi; and others. The trio was felicitated with gamosas, xapis, xarais, and citations.

In a brief speech at the function the secretary of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, K. J. Hilali said that the State Government is trying its best to uplift the sports scenario in the State. Already, various plans have been chalked out for implementation.
