GUWAHATI: Former paddler Rajeev Saikia passed away in a private hospital this evening after prolonged illness. He was 60.

One of the finest and consistent performers in the 70's and '80s, Rajeev played a key role to promote Table Tennis in the State.

From the very early days he showed his talent in this game and lifted several titles in district level meets that included triple crowns in many times. He was the captain of State team which finished runners up in National School Games held in Patna in 1975. Later also participated in the University Zonal meet and made podium finish on multiple occasions. Saikia was equally successful in senior category. He represented the State Team in national championship on several occasions and was one of the top ranked players.
