Gulap Gogoi lifts gold with new national record at Khelo India Games

GUWAHATI: Assam increased number of medals but failed to break the barrier of seventh place in the medal tally on day XI of the Khelo India Youth Games in the city today.

The host collected four medals on Monday which included two gold, one silver, and one bronze. Two gold medals came in weightlifting and these are collected by Gulap Gogoi and Suditya Boruah. Women's swimming team gives silver to the State while the host got the bronze medals in swimming. With these four medals Assam altogether collected 45 medals (15 -14-16).

Gulap Gogoi collected the gold in the 81 kg category in U-21 men’s. He recorded a snatch score of 120 and clean and jerk score of 155 on way to win gold with a total score of 275. During this process, the weightlifter also created new junior national record in clean and jerk and in the total score.

Suditya Boruah collected the other gold medal in the weightlifting today in 89kgs of U-17 men event. He bagged the top spot with a total score of 251.

In the swimming, the U-21 girl's team gave silver medals in Medley relay. Assam team was represented by Shivangi Sarma, Sayeda Antara Zaima, Anubhuti Barua and Rajeshree Buragohain. It was the sixth medal for Shivangi in the Games. Earlier Reinita Gogoi won a bronze medal in the 200mts backstroke with the timing of 2:53.74.

Later part of the day host ensured a bronze medal through Tonmoy Bikash Barua and Navyaranjan Das in U-17 badminton’s boys' doubles. On the other hand, Ankita Gogoi and Isha Rani Baruah entered into the girls' U-17 doubles final defeating K Gnanadha and N Pranavi by 21-12, 16-21 and 21-16.

Meanwhile Assam today stormed into the final of the U-21 men’s football final defeating Maharashtra 3-0 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic stadium. Dipu Mirdha (2) and Uday Sankar Bora were the scorers in the game. The side will now face Punjab in the final. However both U-17 and U-21 girls' team of Assam today lost their semi-final ties.

In tennis, Parikshit Somani and Sheikh Iftikhar ensured at least silver by entering into the final in Boys U-21 category. The duo in the semi-final defeated Akash Ahlawal and Amit Beniwal of Haryana 6-1, 6-0.
