GUWAHATI: Assam registered one of their worst defeat in the Ranji trophy tie here today. The side lost their home match against Maharashtra by a huge margin of 218 runs.

Assam, chasing 297 runs to win, started the day’s proceeding from their overnight score of 12-0. The visitors needed just 23.5 overs in the morning to fold the entire innings of Assam. The home team was bowled out for a paltry 78 runs in their second innings.

Two openers – Subham Mandal and Rahul Hazarika –added 22 between them before Assam lost its first wicket in the form of Rahul Hazarika. Thereafter, there was no resistance from Assam’s batsmen. They lost nine wickets adding just 56 runs on the board. Saahil Jain (19) was the top-scorer while two other batsmen Subham Mandal (17) and Rishav Das (15) were able to score two-digit runs. Among the bowlers of Maharashtra, A Palkar bagged 6-42 and he got good support from M Chaudhary 3-30.

Meanwhile, Assam today brought in pacer Krishna Das in the squad for their next two away games where they will face Odisha and Haryana. The squad: Gokul Sarma (cap), Arup Das (VC), Rishav Das, Riyan Parag, Kunal Saikia, Wasiqur Rahman, Mukhtar Hussain, Ranjeet Mali, Saahil Jain, Subham Mandal, Rajjakuddin Ahmed, Biplab Saikia, Krishna Das, Siddhartha Sarma and Pritam Das.
