Khelo India is a good platform for promising athletes: Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that introduction of Khelo India Games is a good step as it will help groom young athletes of the country for bigger events like the Olympics, Asian Games and the World Championships.

Guwahati will host the third edition of the meet from January 10. Around 10,000 athletes and officials are expected to participate in the Games which will be held in two age categories: U-17 and U-21.

Talking to the sports journalists this morning at his official residence, Sonowal said: “Khelo India is a good initiative and the young sportspersons will be highly benefitted from it. The competition will empower the young generation and help them to realize their potential. The upcoming athletes can utilize this platform and take India to great heights”.

It may be mentioned here that the Assam Government had already announced cash awards for the State medal winners in Khelo India Games. Gold medal winner will receive Rs 1 lakh while the silver and bronze medal winners will collect Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.

Sarbananda Sonowal feels, cash awards is essential for multiple reasons. “It inspires the athletes to go the extra mile to achieve bigger success. They also need money for higher training and to purchase modern equipment," the Chief Minister said.

The budget for this edition of Khelo India is Rs 104 crore and the bulk of it will be spent in infrastructure development (around Rs 33 crore) and accommodation (Rs 24 crore).

The Chief Minister also added: “Assam Government is not only focused on conducting the Games successfully We are looking to create a sporting culture in the State through this event because sports, not only ensure good health, but also helps a person to attain a good character.”
