GUWAHATI: The Nehru stadium is all set to get a new look. Board of Sports of Assam, the owner of the stadium, has planned to reconstruct it adding all ultra modern facilities.

There were several round of discussions held in the earlier years to upgrade the Nehru stadium but practically nothing has happened. Some face lifts were given during the SAF Games by adding proper drainage system in the ground and installing chair in the gallery. But due to poor maintenance the stadium almost returned to its earlier stage. Even chairs too were vanished from the gallery.

But finally Board of Sports of Assam has decided to give facelift in this historical sports venue. A source from the Board of sports of Assam informed The Sentinel that preliminary works has already started. "We have targeted to make the design ready by October and also to complete other related works so that the construction work may begin immediately."

When asked about the propose design of the stadium the source said, "It will be planned by the architect. We would definitely share some ideas with them to make it one of the best stadiums in the country."

It has been learnt that apart from a proper ground along with well equipped gallery and dressing room, the stadium will have all modern facilities, including flood lights, which are required to host national and international events. The office of the different sports associations may also be accommodated in it.

It may be mentioned that RG Baruah, the father figure in Assam's sports, constructed the Nehru stadium during 60's in last century. The stadium, first ODI venue of Assam, hosted several ODI matches along with high voltage clashes of Bordoloi Trophy.
