GUWAHATI: Guwahati is all set to host the first-ever Northeast Half Marathon. The event will be held in the city on February 5 and around 3,000 participants from different parts of the country and a few from abroad are expected to participate in the meet which will be organized by NF Railway (NFR) in association with Innovations India Pvt Ltd.

The competition is aimed at the empowerment of sportspersons and development of sports infrastructure in Northeast India.

Addressing a media gathering the General Manager of NFR Anshul Gupta, who also released the logo of the competition in the same function, said, "N F Railway is steadfast in its endeavour of empowering the sportspersons and development of Northeast India apart from connectivity and Northeast Half Marathon is one such step in that direction."

He also highlighted the work that NF Railway is doing to promote sports in the region through creating new and upgrading existing infrastructure.

President NFRSA Rajeev Mahajan and curator of the event captain Rahul Bali were also present in the media briefing along with several national and international sportspersons which included, national cycling champion Ronaldo Singh, Rojit Singh, Dronacharya Awardee in Boxing Sagarmal Dhayal, International Boxer Kalpana Choudhury, international marathon runner Abdul Barek, Arjuna Awardee boxer Md. Ali Qamar, Asian Games gold medallist Saraswati Saha, former cricketer Rajesh Bora, Javed Zaman and sports co-ordinator from Railway Sports Promotion Board Sudhir Hooda.

In Guwahati edition the marathon will be held in three different categories-21.1 kms, 10km and 5 km. The marathon will begin from the NFRSA stadium, Maligaon and will culminate at the same place. Prizes worth Rs 11 lakh would be given to the winners in addition to the trophies, medals and certificates.
