GUWAHATI: With an aim to promote local talents, the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) has decided to bar foreigners from playing in the Guwahati Football Leagues. The decision was taken after a discussion with 36 affiliated Football Clubs of the city.

The General Secretary of Gauhati sports Association Dhrubajyoti Kalita said, "There is no dearth of football talents in the state. But due to lack of opportunities, most of the local players could not showcase their talent at the highest level. We feel they should get more opportunities and because of this we have decided to bar foreigners in the local Leagues."

On the other hand, the GSA has decided to make medical insurance of every player and inclusion of four U-21 players in the club team mandatory. The GSA is also considering banning players who are reported by the concerned club of playing unauthorized games.

Meanwhile the Football Secretary of the GSA L Pranab Singh informed that the 2022-23 Football season of the GSA will start from June 6 with C Division Qualifying League. Inter Club clearance of all divisions will be held from June 7-9 and the date of withdrawal will be on June 10. As per the schedule this time N N Bhattacharyya Knockout Football Tournament will start from July 15 and it would be followed by 'A' Division Football League from July 22. Players registration for 'A' and Super Division will be held from July 15- 20. Schedule for the Super Division Football League, Bordoloi Trophy along with the first ever Inter Club Women's League, U-13 and U-16 League and Inter School Tournament will be announced later.
