GUWAHATI: ICC World Cup 2023 warm-up tie between India and England has been called off in Gu-wahati due to heavy rain on Saturday. The umpires decided to call off the match after they found the ground too wet to play.

There was a forecast of heavy downpour in the city on Friday and it happened. The rain started after Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. It came so suddenly that the ground staff had to work hard to cover pitch and ground. The rain was accompanied by strong wind and it destroyed many hoardings placed in the gallery.

As the water logged a few areas, particularly at the boundary line, the uncertainty started to gloom about the start of the game and finally the umpires, after waiting several hours, decided to call off the game and both the teams were immediately returned to the hotels.

It may be mentioned here that Guwahati was allotted to host four warm-up matches of the ICC World Cup 2023. In the first game yesterday Bangladesh won against Sri Lanka by a comfortable margin.

Indian fans were eagerly waiting for the second warm up tie between England and India. Many spectators to-day turned up into the ground to witness the game but had to return home with a bit of frustration.

It was the second occasion when an international match was abandoned at the ACA Stadium, Barsapara, due to rain. Earlier in 2020 the T20I between India and Sri Lanka was called off due to the same reason.

As the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled the price of the ticket will be refunded to the specta-tors. The amount of the ticket price will be credited to the accounts of the buyers within the next few days.

Meanwhile, the Indian team will fly to Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday for their last warm up match against Netherland scheduled to be held on October 2. England will stay in Guwahati and will face Bangladesh in their final warm up tie on Monday. The last warm up match in Guwahati will be held between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan on October 3. Afghanistan team arrived in the city today to play the match.

The ICC World Cup 2023 will begin at Ahmedabad on October 5 and England will face New Zealand in the opening game.
