Rural areas need more attention: Sandip Singh

Former captain of Indian hockey team and Sports Minister of Haryana Sandip Singh said that more attention needs to be given in the rural areas as most of the players of the country belong to those places.

GUWAHATI: Former captain of Indian hockey team and Sports Minister of Haryana Sandip Singh said that more attention needs to be given in the rural areas as most of the players of the country belong to those places.

Sandip spent last two days in Guwahati and inspected city's ultra modern sports infrastructure including Sarusajai Sports Complex. During this visit he also met with the top officials of State Sports department and Assam Olympic Association to know how Assam successfully hosted different multi disciplined Games like Khelo India, South Asian Games and National Games. It may be mentioned here that Haryana will organize next Khelo India in 2021.

Attending a felicitation function, hosted by Assam Olympic Association last evening at Hotel Vivanta, Sandip said, "I visited Guwahati earlier on several occasions and last time during Khelo India. The way you had organized the meet was fantastic and it refreshed my playing day's memory."

Justifying his comment on promote sports in the rural areas former hockey player who earned special fame for his spectacular drag flick, said, "80 percent sportspersons of our country come from rural areas and it included cricket too. So we should provide more attention to the rural areas and I belief it will bring a major change in the sports scenario of the country."

He also belives that there must be good coordination among the sports administrators, players, coaches, trainers physio and the other persons who are involved with different branches of sports. "We need proper coordination among them and it is now very essential to get success,' said Singh.

Among other present in the felicitation function was Law and Justice Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya and the general secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar.
