Sarma, Sonowal Send Best Wishes To Assam Contingent Perform Without Taking Any Pressure: CM

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal today handed over the kits to the State athlete who will participate in the forthcoming 36th National Games schedule to be held in Gujarat. The duo also launched the players jersey in the same function held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the city.

Sending best wishes to the players on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the National Games is important because it is associated not only with individual achievement but most importantly with pride and prestige of the state. While drawing a comparison of performance of the state in the last three National Games, Chief Minister Sarma advised the players to exert their best without any performance pressure so that the state can shine at the event.

He also made an appeal to the state players not to use banned substances and to be very cautious while taking drugs for any illness. He also urged them to maintain discipline, good behaviour and sportsmanship spirit during the course of the game.

Further saying that the state government is working to take the state on the path of excellence in sports, Dr. Sarma informed about various steps taken for upgradation of sports infrastructure in the state. He said that a new stadium will be built at Chandrapur in Guwahati and infrastructure of Nehru stadium will be upgraded. For this purpose, a process is already underway for acquisition of the land of Hotel Landmark so that more land is available for the stadium.

The Chief Minister said that as per request of Assam Olympic Association, steps are taken for the state players to travel by air for the first time to participate in the National Games. Assam is sending a strong contingent in the Games. Stars Hima Das and Nayanmoni Saikia were present in the function and received kits from Sarma and Sonowal respectively.

The programme was also addressed by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and president of AOA Sarbananda Sonowal. In his speech Sonowal urged the players to give their best in the forthcoming Games and try to take Assam within top five States in the medal tally.

Among others present in the function were Additional Chief Secretary (Sports). Maninder Singh, Director of Sports Nibedan Das Patowary, secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar and several former international players.

Assam will participate in 21 events and more than 100 players and officials will be the part of the State contingent.
