According to Sunn, consequent upon the election of the new office bearers of the Shillong Sports Council in 2019, a decision was taken to improve the playing surface of the Ground No.1 for the benefit of the players.

“The ongoing improvement comprises of construction of drains across the ground, removing of topsoil followed by stone and sand filling and lastly, laying of natural grass turf,” the SSA president said. He also informed that the Ground No.1 will be ready for use in the coming 2020 season. Sunn also informed that SSA in its effort to promote sports in the capital in particular and the state in general, is facing an uphill task and many challenges in terms of infrastructure and finance.

Sunn informed that more than 3000 players are registered with the SSA every year.

He said that for conducting matches for the five divisions the SSA has to approach several authorities for permission to use their respective grounds.

“We approached the Meghalaya Football Association for permission to utilize the third ground (artificial turf), at a cost, department of Sports and Youth Affairs for permission to utilize the JN Stadium and the Shillong Recreation Ground Trust for permission to use the Second Ground to complete the different tournaments conducted by SSA regularly every year,” Sunn said.

The SSA President said that in terms of finance, SSA has practically no source to generate revenue and the only source of revenue is from entry fees, registration fees, and gate collections.
