State medallists in South Asian Games to get cash award

GUWAHATI: All the athletes of the State, who won medals in the SAF Games held recently in Nepal, will receive cash award during the Chief Minister’s Sports Award which is scheduled to be held in the city on December 29. The cash award for State medal winners in the previous SAF Games, held in Guwahati and Shillong, will also handed over in the same function.

Announcing the news in a media briefing the secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar, who is also the Member Secretary of the SLAC, said, “The award function will be held at the Karmavir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium and it will be attended by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Six State players had won nine medals in the recently concluded SAF Games. All the gold medal winners will receive 1.5 lakh while silver and bronze medal winners will collect a purse of Rs 1 lakh and 75 thousand respectively.”

However as per the earlier announcement the medal winners in last South Asian Games will collect Rs 10 lakh (gold), 5 lakh (silver) and 3 lakh (bronze). Some of the other medal winners in the different international meets will also receive cash awards in the same function.

Meanwhile the Torch Relay for the forthcoming Khelo India Games will kick off at the CM’s Sports Award function on November 29. Lakhya added: “As a part of the sports awareness programme the torch will travel all the 33 districts of the state before returns to Guwahati on January 10 for opening ceremony. The video of the Theme songs for the forthcoming Khelo India Games will also be released in the function which will be featured some of the top international athletes from the State like Hima Das, Lovlina Borgohain and a few others.
