GUWAHATI: The Assam Weightlifting Association is all set to host the first state level weightlifting meet at Haflong after the COVID-19 break. In an interaction with The Sentinel the secretary of the Assam Weightlifting Association Bhabajyoti Goswami shared the preparation of the meet and the other aspect of the competition. Here is the excerpt.

The Sentinel (TS): You are going to host the 1st State level weightlifting meet after COVID-19 break. How is the preparation?

Bhabajyoti: It's fine. Haflong will host the four-day competition from December 26. There would be three categories in the meet and these are: Youth, Junior and Senior.

TS: Perhaps you have to impose a lot of restrictions for the weightlifters this time!

Bhabajyoti: Yes. We would fully follow the Government's COVID-19 protocols during the competition. Players would get special instruction so that they don't break the rules. Actually our calendar ends in December. So if we don't host the meet then many weightlifters will loss the opportunity to participate in their current age group next year and it is because of that we have decided to host the event now. Recently Haflong organized a couple of other completions successfully and hope we won't face too much of a problem.

TS: How many participants are you expecting in the meet?

Bhabajyoti: This time it would be definitely less than we had witnessed in the earlier years. Still expecting around 200-250 participants from the different parts of the state.

TS: What is the present status of the game in the State?

Bhabajyoti: After COVID-19 break weightlifters have started to return into the game and have begun practice. However it will take little time before everything becomes normal as it was earlier.
