Wheelchair Basketball Workshop begins at Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The two-day workshop on wheelchair basketball got underway at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai Sports Complex here today. The workshop is jointly organized by the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI), Sports Authority of Assam and Shishu Sarothi.

This is the first time in the history of Para-Sports that wheelchair basketball is introduced in Assam. The goal of the Workshop is to train the first set of players and coaches from Assam for the long-term development of the sport amongst the disability sector in India. It is hoped that the training will go a long way in contributing to increasing the number of qualified coaches and players for the game in India.

The workshop was inaugurated by Lakhya Konwar, the Member Secretary of the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare.

The inaugural function was also attended by Pabitra Ram Khound, the Director of the Sports and Youth Welfare, Subhash Basumatari, Director of the Sports Authority of Assam and Kalyani Rajaraman, Secretary-General, wheelchair basketball Federation of India. Nearly 30 players are taking part in the Workshop and 7 of them are women players.
