World Champion MC Mary Kom’s Boxing Academy gets New Ring

Six-time World Champion MC Mary Kom’s boxing academy at Imphal has found fresh support from tyre manufacturer Goodyear India, which helped bring up a new ring and some other infrastructure at the facility as part of its CSR initiative.

On Thursday, the ring was inaugurated by Mary Kom and her husband Onler Kom-who is a Co-founder and managing director of the academy along with Goodyear India’s Finance Director Mitesh Mittal. Meanwhile, the company has also supported the first phase construction of the dining hall and kitchen at the academy. “In the year 2018-2019, the best Indian talent in sports, we decided to explore a new area in our CSR Initiative by contributing to the promotion of rural sports development with the purpose of nurturing the best Indian talent in sports,” Mittal said.

36-year-old Mary Kom recently fetched a record of eight medals at the World Championships, finishing with a bronze, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP. Even this year, she has also won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and the President’s Cup in Indonesia. Besides that, all the top awards associated with the sport, including the Arjuna Award (2003), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2009), Padma Shri (2010) and Padma Bhushan (2013) has been received by Mary Kom. The Manipur government conferred on her the title Meethoi Leima (great/exceptional lady) in 2018. A road has been named after her.

MC Mary Kom and Asian Games medalist Sarita Devi turn Manipur into boxing hotbed. They are among the first generation of Indian women boxers-have taken the veteran athlete’s clichéd promise of giving it back and turned it into a reality.
