Manipur CM N. Biren Singh says govt thinking to name districts in Manipur after fruits

GUWAHATI: Manipur CM N.Biren Singh has recently proposed that districts in the state of Manipur should be named after fruits and spices.

He mentioned it during a consultative meeting-cum-technology exhibition ‘CSIR Connect North East’ held at CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal recently.

This he said could bring attention to the state's agricultural produce, such as, oranges in Tamenglong district as well as the indigenous Kachai lemon in Ukhrul district and many more. This idea was criticized by the Congress.

"BJP Government in Manipur is thinking of changing the names of districts after their respective fruits grown in the districts in the state. The BJP Government policies of re-writing history in this manner is to essentially belittle the history behind naming all the districts of Manipur," tweeted Congress spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei.

Last year, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) had decided to rename the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as the Arun Jaitley Stadium after the former DDCA President and BCCI Vice-President.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced that the Rohtang tunnel, which connects Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, and Manali with Leh, will now be known as the ‘Atal Tunnel’.

Modi made the announcement to name the tunnel on the occasion of the 95th birth anniversary of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying “this is a small gift from the government to the people of Himachal on Atalji’s birthday.”

In January this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed Kolkata Port after Syama Prasad Mookerjee — an Indian politician, barrister, and academician, who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.

Modi made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Netaji Indoor Stadium here on the occasion of the 150th-anniversary celebrations of Kolkata Port Trust.
