Imphal: Manipur is set to establish its first-ever Automated Testing Station (ATS) in Imphal East, marking a major step toward enhancing vehicle fitness and road safety. A tripartite agreement was signed on Wednesday between the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the Government of Manipur’s Transport Department, and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).

According to Transport Director Khumanthem Diana, the upcoming facility will be located at Teramakhong, Village No. 76-Tellou, under the Lamlai Assembly Constituency. Designed to serve both heavy and light motor vehicles, the ATS will include fully automated lanes and cutting-edge equipment to assess critical parameters such as brake efficiency, suspension, emissions, headlight alignment, and chassis health.

Funded entirely by MoRTH at a cost of ₹14.25 crore, the station aims to modernize vehicle testing and promote eco-friendly compliance with national safety norms. The initiative aligns with the Centre’s GSR 663(E) notification, issued on September 12, 2023, mandating that all fitness testing for commercial and light motor vehicles be conducted exclusively at automated stations.

Until now, such inspections have been carried out manually by District Transport Officers as a temporary measure due to the absence of automated facilities.

Diana noted that the ATS would boost transparency, minimize human error, and contribute significantly to reducing road accidents. Once operational, the facility will cater to both public and private vehicles, enhancing the overall efficiency and accountability of Manipur’s transport system.
