IMPHAL: The Assam Rifles, along with Manipur Police, were able to rescue an employee of a private company within 24 hours after he was abducted by armed cadres of a mysterious insurgent group, a Defence official told on Friday.

The joint operation resulted in the safe rescue of Sunil Kumar from Tollen Village in Manipur's Tamenglong district last Thursday night, the Defence spokesperson said.

Kumar, who worked for a company involved in road construction works, including the National Highway, had been kidnapped on Wednesday from a stone quarry on the Barak River bed, near Maokot village — a region located at the tri-junction of Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland.

The Assam Rifles and Manipur Police started an extensive investigation immediately after the incident, carefully reconstructing the facts of the abduction. They also sought support from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to present a common front to help the victim recover safely and soon.

The operation involved multiple raids carried out by the Assam Rifles in the dense jungles surrounding the region. Simultaneously, CSOs worked tirelessly on the ground to gather real-time intelligence, applying social pressure and community influence that eventually compelled the abductors to release Kumar unharmed within a day of his kidnapping.

A statement issued by the Assam Rifles noted the successful operation as a reflection of their unflinching commitment to the security of civilians and their firm stand against criminal and militant activities in the area. Security forces are still investigating the case to determine and arrest the culprits behind the kidnapping.

In a related but independent development, Manipur Police raided militant activities throughout the state, detaining 11 people belonging to different banned valley-based insurgent groups in the last 24 hours. The militants were members of banned organizations like PREPAK, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), and United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK).

Police authorities announced that the arrested militants had been engaged in a variety of illegal activities, such as kidnapping, extortion of businessmen, government officials, and contractors, and delivery of threat notices to people.

Arrests were conducted from various districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Thoubal, demonstrating the widespread nature of the security raid. Interrogations are still ongoing to gather more information on the operations and structures of the groups.
