IMPHAL: The Lok Sabha passed a statutory resolution confirming the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the resolution, emphasizing the government's commitment to restoring order in the state, which has faced significant unrest on Thursday.
During the debate, Shah reported that there has been no violence in Manipur for the past four months, although he acknowledged that the situation is not yet satisfactory. He stated, "The situation is under control," and noted that discussions have been held with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to facilitate a peaceful resolution. Despite the absence of violence, Shah expressed concern over the continued presence of individuals in relief camps.
The Home Minister pointed out the sad loss of at least 260 lives through ethnic clashes that have gone on for months. He attributed the beginning of the riots to an order passed by the state's High Court. He assured the House that central forces were deployed immediately following the order to prevent further escalation.
Following the resolution's passage, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed hope for the restoration of peace in Manipur, while questioning the timing of the discussion, which took place at 2 a.m. Other opposition members, including DMK MP Kanimozhi, criticized the government for delaying the discussion on such a critical issue, asserting that it reflects a lack of concern for the people of Manipur. President's Rule has been in effect since February 13, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
