
IMPHAL: In a major crackdown against narcotics smuggling, ten suspects have been apprehended by the Manipur police in two seperate raids pertaining to drug trafficking and illegal poppy cultivation in Kangpokpi district.
The cops arrested a total of six drug traffickers in connection with a case registered at Kangpokpi police station. The detainees have been identified as Khaikahao Kipgen alias John, Letgoumang Touthang alias Amon, Aabi Baral, Jitten Kharka, L H Ranirou and Leah Chao.
During the operation, 174 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar were seized by the police who also recovered a four-wheeler from their possession.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, four persons were nabbed by the police for their involvement in illegal poppy cultivation at Songjang village, located along IT Road under Kangpokpi police station.
The identities of the apprehended individuals have been revealed as Janggoulen Kipgen, Letginlal Kipgen, Kamginlen Kipgen and Thangminlen Kipgen.
All the ten arrested persons were handed over to the concerned police stations for further legal action.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, a total of 4.8 hectares of illicit poppy cultivation were destroyed in Senapati district.
"In a significant breakthrough in our war on drugs, Senapati Police, the Forest Department, and district administration have destroyed 4.8 hectares of illicit poppy cultivation at Kangjang Hills, Senapati," former Manipur CM N Biren Singh had informed in a post on X.
