Manipur: 59 Acres of Illegal Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Ukhrul and Kangpokpi

UKHRUL: The Manipur police have destroyed 59 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts, intensifying the war against drugs, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh informed on his X handle.  

In Ukhrul, the police apprehended two individuals and destroyed 45 acres of illegal poppy cultivation at the Mapithel hill range in Phungyar.

The forest department, Border Security Force (BSF), and the district administration launched a joint operation that resulted in the arrests. The arrested individuals have been identified as Letkhohao Haokip (37) and Hegou Khongsai (30) from Ukhrul. 

In a separate operation, the personnel destroyed 14 acres of illegal poppy plantations near Thonglang Akutpa in the Kangpokpi district. 

Officials have filed an FIR and initiated action against those involved in illegal poppy plantations. 

Praising the security forces for their efforts, Chief Minister N Biren Singh posted on X, "I appreciate the combined team of Kangpokpi district police and 90 CRPF personnel, led by Additional SP (L/O) under the supervision of SP Kangpokpi, for destroying 14 acres of illegal poppy plantations near Thonglang Akutpa and registering an FIR for further investigation."

Furthermore, the chief minister also appreciated the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for their "exceptional contributions."  

The chief minister said, "These actions reaffirm the state and the Union government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug threats and advancing the war on drugs campaign."
