IMPHAL: Armed attackers on Friday resorted to gunfire and bomb attacks on two villages in Imphal East district, Manipur, creating massive panic among the villagers. The security forces acted in a very prompt manner when the attacks took place at Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages.
At around 10:45 am, armed men from the hills began indiscriminately firing and hurling bombs at Sanasabi village. This set off a furious exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security personnel stationed in the area. Local residents were seen running for cover as the violence unfolded.
The situation got worse when the attackers went to Thamnapokpi village at about 11:30 am. Their acts caused further chaos and panic, as many villagers had to run away. Though there is a heavy gun battle, there are no casualties reported so far.
Amid the continuing violence, rescue operations have been launched by security forces, including CRPF personnel, to evacuate civilians trapped in the crossfire. Females, children, and old people were secured and transported to a safer region.
This region has witnessed intense ethnic violence since May 2023, where clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups claimed at least 250 lives and left thousands homeless. The situation in Imphal East, however, remains tense, with authorities on high alert to prevent further attacks to ensure the safety of the populace.
