IMPHAL: Security personnel in Manipur's Chandel district seized brown sugar worth Rs 3.29 crore and arrested a 23-year-old man in the case, officials said on Tuesday, March 18. The operation was part of ongoing initiatives to check drug trafficking in the area.
Based on intelligence inputs, a group of Assam Rifles conducted an operation in Kuljang village on 16 March. During the raid, 137 soap cases packed with brown sugar were seized by authorities. Besides the drugs, two mobile phones were also recovered from the accused, as per an official release of Assam Rifles.
The arrested man, a native of Tengnoupal district, has been taken into custody by the police for investigation. The authorities are now investigating possible connections between the suspect and wider drug networks that operate in the area.
The seizure underlines the long-standing drug smuggling issues in Manipur, which borders Myanmar, a known hotspot for illegal drug trade. Security personnel keep ramping up anti-narcotics operations to check trafficking and disrupt organized drug syndicates.
