
IMPHAL: On New Year’s Eve, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a heartfelt apology to the people of the state, expressing regret for the turmoil and suffering caused by prolonged unrest. Reflecting on the challenges faced since May 3, 2023, he remarked, “This entire year has been very unfortunate. I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what’s happening till today.”
Speaking at a press conference in Imphal, Singh acknowledged the devastating impact of the ethnic violence, which claimed lives and displaced many families. “Many people lost their loved ones. Many people left their homes. I apologise,” he added, emphasizing his awareness of the pain endured by the citizens.
Expressing optimism for the future, the Chief Minister shared his hope that peace efforts over the past months would soon bring results. “I believe by 2025, normalcy will be restored in the state,” he said.
Providing details on the government’s response, Singh disclosed that approximately 250 lives were lost during the unrest. Authorities registered 12,247 FIRs, arrested 625 individuals, and recovered 5,600 weapons, including explosives and 35,000 rounds of ammunition.
The Chief Minister assured citizens that the central government had extended substantial support. “The Centre has given enough funds to help displaced families and construct new houses. Security personnel have also been adequately deployed,” he stated.
